- In 2016, the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine was awarded to a researcher named Yoshinori Ohsumi. He had discovered the underlying mechanisms behind a process called autophagy. Autophagy is the process by which cells destroy and recycle some of their inner components. Research shows this is important to prevent cancer, Parkinson’s Alzheimer’s, type 2 diabetes, and a host of other ailments.
